Veteran actor and sitting BJP MP Vinod Khanna passed away at the age of 70 on Thursday after a difficult battle with cancer.
The actor, who was part of several Bollywood hits like Amar Akbar Anthony and The Burning Train, was admitted to the HN Reliance Foundation and Research Centre in Girgaon, Mumbai recently.
A photo of the actor in which he looked frail and a shadow of his former self had shocked his fans and many in the film fraternity.
Vinod Khanna, a sitting Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Gurdaspur district of Punjab, was born on 6 October, 1946. He was seen in 141 films between 1968 and 2013.
Khanna was also seen in lead roles in several popular films, including Mere Apne, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Gaddaar, Jail Yatra, Imitihaan, Inkaar, Kuchhe Dhaage, Amar Akbar Anthony, Rajput, Qurbani, Kudrat, Dayavan, Kaarnama, Suryaa: An Awakening and Jurm.
Vinod Khanna made his debut in 1968 with Mann Ka Meet. He went on to win numerous awards, including the Filmfare award for best supporting actor for Haath ki Safaai and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.
After a five-year hiatus, he returned to the Hindi film industry to give hit films Insaaf and Satyamev Jayate.
Khanna joined politics in 1997 and got elected from Gurdaspur on a BJP ticket in the next year’s Lok Sabha poll. Later, during the time of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government he became Union minister for culture and tourism in 2002. Later, he became a minister of state in the Ministry of External Affairs. Khanna lost the 2009 election, but was elected again from Gurdaspur in 2014.
After such an impressive career, in 1982 he took a break from work to join his guru Osho Rajneesh at his ashram. He gave up films altogether in that period. After a five-year break from work, he started signing films again and gave two superhits, Insaaf and Satyamev Jayate.
Even with a busy career in politics, Vinod did not give up on Bollywood and worked in some of the latest films like Dabangg, Players, Dabangg 2 and Dilwale, and received a lot of love for his work. In late 2016 and early 2017, news about his detoriating health started coming in, this kept him away from a public eye. In his last days he was surrounded by all his children and wife Kavita.
